Redefining the Hoodie for Men

Men fashion is now as changeable as women’s but there are certain pieces of clothing that men love so much that no matter what is in vogue they will stay as favorites in men’s wardrobes. Hoodie is one of such items. And considering the fact men consider hoodies versatile they should be of very high quality to keep shape and color for a long time.

The hoodie has always been the old stand-by in any man’s winter wardrobe. When I say stand-by, I really mean that it goes unwashed for weeks at a time while collecting various dustings from cheese flavored Frito-Lay products and a distinct smell of stale beer. Sure, the style might be able to go with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, but we usually see these men wearing the same hoodies to restaurants, bars, and even work.

This season, some designers are trying to incorporate the effortless look of the classic hoodie into their casual clothing lines. While the traditional hoodie still belongs in the sportswear section at Sports Authority, mens clothing is becoming increasingly comfortable and calm and able to incorporate such elements in a unique and masculine sense.

One of the biggest male trends for the upcoming season is the incorporation of earth-tone colors and a unique ethnic design flare to the mix. Collenzie-C2‘s winter mix includes a version of the poncho for men, hoodies with very loose silhouettes, and ribbed vests.

Puma has always been able to match a unique athletic prowess to high fashion gear. Their line of track jackets and hoodies include a brightly colored padded jacket, mix and match fabric track jackets, and a line of monochrome hoodies set to shake up common conceptions about the product.

Marc by Marc Jacobs features a truly unique vision of the hoodie by trying to incorporate the patterns of an airport tarmac into the zipper design. This style adds height to whoever wears it and a sense of danger with the gunmetal button holes. The roughed pocket edges also make a nice addition to the rawness of the piece.

Going the opposite way, Kinetix is offering a horizontally striped navy/light blue hoodie that offers a more comfortable and lighter feel common to the casual hoodie.

Along with the designer labels, vintage and worn prints are also in for this season. Chaser LA offers a faded red hoodie with the Coca-Cola Classic logo imprinted on the front. There are no frills or gimmicks to the new line of vintage prints, just a classic branded message that will be sure to garner more attention than a beer stained Hanes hoodie from Target.

Sweatpants, flip-flops, and six-packs of beer can also stay at home when traveling outside of the confines of the PS3 or Xbox 360. There’s no reason to travel around in a pile of built up video game chair sweat. Wearing designer hoodies and track jackets can give your muscles the appearance of growth instead of the atrophied look you’ve been honing since Thanksgiving.
